Hail usually has to be the size of a golf ball before it will break, split or bruise the roof shingle. When driven by high winds for several minutes or longer, the loss can be substantial, regardless of the size. Damage is often missed from ground level inspections.

Based on the severity of a storm, it is very likely that you have sustained some type of damage to your home. Cracks or holes in vinyl siding, or dents in aluminum siding can lead to leaks and structural damage or cosmetically impair your home's appearance. Hail and high winds can cause serious damage to your roof, siding, gutters, and fascia. However, not all damage is easily visible.

Damage to asphalt shingles occurs when the shingle suffers granule loss, or breaking of the shingle entirely, exposing the organic base to ultraviolet rays, causing further deterioration of the material. To an untrained eye, even close inspection of insignificant looking strikes can ultimately shorten the life of your roof by up to 40%.
The insidious nature of hail damage is that it may pose no immediate threat to the structural integrity of the rood. However, many insurance companies have a "stature of limitations" as to how long a hail claim is viable. If you have experienced a loss such as hail damage, take precautions to resolve the problem.
